Defunct Japanese manufacturer of photo cameras and accessories, optics, binoculars, photocopiers, fax machines and laser printers (1928—2003); formerly headquartered in Osaka. In 2003, Minolta merged with Konica to form Konica Minolta, which continued making cameras and photo-related products for another three years, selling this division to Sony in 2006.
Minolta Co., Ltd. (ミノルタ) was founded as Nichi-Doku Shashinki Shōten (日独写真機商店, or "Japanese-German Camera Shop" in English). The company adopted its Minolta brand, an acronym for "Mechanism, Instruments, Optics, and Lenses by Tashima," in 1931. The company developed the first integrated autofocus 35-mm SLR camera in the world.
