German chemical company, founded 1847 in Berlin by Theodor Goldschmidt. 1890: Relocation of the company's headquarters to Essen. 2000: The company becomes a subsidiary of the Degussa Group. Currently the main previous activities of the firm are continued under the umbrella of the industrial corporation Evonik Industries.
