When EMI ended their partnership of CBS in Malaysia and Singapore in 1981, CBS began its operation in these two countries. In Asia, these followed CBS/Sony that started its operation in Hong Kong in 1978 (company name: CBS/Sony Hong Kong Ltd., 10 years after that same company commenced its operation in Japan).
The code used for local repertoire albums by CBS were M, MC and MCD, for vinyl, cassette and CD releases, respectively. After it changed its name to Sony Music Entertainment (M) Sdn. Bhd in 1991, these codes were retained for all local releases until 1997. Only Ibnor Riza's Meneka Dalam Kesamaran followed the standard album code that CBS and later Sony Music using it internationally. The album is identified by the code 451019 4 for cassette.
CBS was also the first record company in Malaysia to release an album by a domestic singer in compact disc in 1988. The album was Kali Pertama by Fairuz Hussein.

For non-Malay repertoire in particular, these copyright warnings were used: "All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved and unauthorised public performance, broadcasting or copying of this recording is prohibited" and "All rights of the producer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised copying, hiring, renting, public performance and broadcasting of this cassette prohibited". The latter, however, was only printed in the cassette on both sides, while the former was used in both releases of CBS and later Sony Music in Malaysia and Singapore, as the branch of these two countries are closely linked. These were usually printed in all capital letters.
On the cassette of their releases, CBS Stereo Cassette phrase were almost always printed, either with the CBS or Epic brand. In addition, their earlier albums included these phrases: Buatan Malaysia and Printed by Digitpress (the later would include the address and the full company name: Digitpress Sdn. Bhd.). Local albums released by other record companies but distributed by CBS had a different album code which was not given by CBS itself, with the exception of The Unwanted (4).
