Stavelot Abbey was a former Benedictine monastery in Stavelot, in the province of Liege (Walloon Region in Belgium). Founded in 651, the monastery was associated with that of Malmedy (they are often called "double monastery," although it is two monasteries men.1).
The abbey founded in the seventh century and suppprimée in 1794, following the French Revolution, was the seat of an ecclesiastical principality - the Principality of Stavelot-Malmedy - who ruled much of the Ardennes, to Logne. The princes then were also the leaders of the abbey.
