Dai-Keong Lee (1915-2005) American composer, born in Honolulu and of Chinese descent, he was the first notable Asian-American classical music composer. By 1938, his first opera had been produced in New York and RCA Victor recorded his "Prelude and Hula" in 1941 while he was serving in the U.S. Army. A student of Roger Sessions and Aaron Copland, he composed operas, ballets, concertos, orchestral works and two symphonies, the second of which was a runner-up for the 1952 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Noted also for his incidental music score for the Broadway comedy "Teahouse of the August Moon" which was the most Tony-awarded play of 1954.
