American musician (born March 4, 1901 in Milesburg, Pennsylvania - died April 13, 1993 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida). Campbell played flute with Sousa's Band and clarinet, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, and flute with Fred Waring & The Pennsylvanians. The son of musician parents who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Tyrone, Campbell landed his first musical job at age 13, playing the flute with his parent's railroad band, the Tyrone Shop Band. At age 19, he worked as a stenographer for the railroad. Hired by the Sousa Band, he played not only in the band but also worked as John Philip Sousa's personal secretary. Sousa dictated his autobiography, "Marching Along" (1928) to Mr. Campbell. After Sousa, Campbell played for 34 years with another Tyrone, PA native, Fred Waring and his band, from 1923 until 1957. In retirement, Campbell and his wife Mildred moved to Seminole, Florida. There, however, he soon joined the Tampa Symphony Orchestra, playing the flute or the piccolo for them until his final retirement in 1974.
