Influenced by bands like Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Big Black, Bad Brains and everything 4AD, I am the Waltons were a 6-piece, noise/indie band that worked together, played live and had huge fun around Dublin from 1989 to 1992. All taking on Walton monikers, the band was made up of Bart, Scuba, Cypher, Omen and our fearless leader Saiden, as well as a string of drummers, none of whom we could convince to stay around very long, but were given the moniker Bubba. We began by supporting bands like Rex and Dino, Therapy? & Whipping Boy and played many times in venues like The Underground, The Baggot Inn and McGonigals. We recorded a bunch of demos and a Fanning Session with RTE, but mainly due to financial constraints, never officially released anything. Featuring 2 guitars and 2 bases, our gigs were a sonic feast/punch, and Hot Press Magazine reviewed one of our gigs saying: “it all sounds like noise to me”! We knew we had hit the brief at that point, and made sure this valued quote went onto our posters from then on! Members of the group went on to make music in other outfits like Hey Paulette, The Sewing Room, Crumb, Villa R, The Deportees, Invisible Alan & Lexicon of Sound. 30 years later, Colm Fitzpatrick AKA Bart (Lexicon of Sound) led the charge to dig through the tapes, remaster everything and get the music out there for Gen Z (& Y & X!). This led to the November 2020 release of a kind of IATW 11-track discography: “Hopelessly Free: The premature climax and inevitable disintegration of I am the Waltons”.
