British bassoonist, conductor and composer. Born: 27 July 1912 in Croydon, England - Died: 12 October 1996 in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London, but never graduated, leaving early to become Principal Bassoonist with the rising Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra in 1937. He was a founder member of the Philharmonia Orchestra, a member of Benjamin Britten's English Opera Group orchestra, and conductor of The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Professor at the Trinity College Of Music, London. He composed the music to the Smallfilms productions of "Noggin the Nog", "The Seal of Neptune", "Pogles' Wood", "Pingwings" and "Clangers".
