Czech composer, arranger, tuba and double bass player. Born in Prague on December 4, 1871 - Died in London in 1942. Studied at the Prague Conservatoire double bass with František Černý (4) or/and Vendelín Sládek and composition with Antonín Dvořák. In 1894, he moved to England and settled in London where he lived until his death in 1942. He became an editor and music adviser for Hawkes & Son (later to become Boosey & Hawkes) from 1906. As an orchestral bassist, he played throughout Great Britain and was Principal Bass of the Queen's Hall Orchestra/The New Queen's Hall Orchestra (1898-1930), The London Symphony Orchestra (1933-1940), Guildford Symphony Orchestra, London String Players and Glyndebourne Festival Orchestra (1935-1936). "The Ragtime Bass Player" is probably his most popular work, composed in 1913.
