Married to his main co-songwriter Lucile Johnson. For the country songwriter ("The Great Speckled Bird"), see Roy Carter (5) Best known for writing the song "All Right, Louis, Drop the Gun"; with his wife. The Wesson Brothers with the song in 1949, landing at #11. He conducted the Ray Carter Orchestra for the The Arthur Murray Party (1952-1960). He also wrote children's songs with Paul Tripp, many for television programs. He charted as a songwriter with Paul Tripp in 1964 with "Nice and Easy" by Charlie Rich; The song hit #131 on the U.S. charts.
