US jazz pianist/arranger/composer. Born: December 07, 1917 in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Died: February 28, 1989 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Father of jazz pianist [a2161499]. Billy worked (as arranger), among others, with Jimmie Lunceford, Charlie Barnet, Jan Savitt, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Tommy Dorsey. He spent a year with the band Jimmie Lunceford And His Orchestra (Sy Oliver personally brought him in as his "replacement" in June, 1939) and left a vital impression with his Belgium Stomp, Monotony In Four Flats, and the hits Chopin's Prelude #7 and What's Your Story Morning Glory? He quit over acrimonious monetary disputes.
