His songwriting career began in 1936 with his song "Forget If You Can" recorded by Billie Holiday. His song "When Paw Was Coutin' Maw" (co-written by Leonard Joy) by Dick Todd reached #9 in the U.S. in 1938. "Midnight Masquerade" (co-written by Arthur Berman & Bernard Bierman) by Monica Lewis charted to #16 in 1947. He had an additional 5 songs that charted, including "Vanity" (co-written by Guy Wood & Bernard Bierman), which charted 3 times by Don Cherry, Sarah Vaughn, and Tony Martin.
