Angus Lee

Born in then British–Hong Kong, Angus Lee (b.1992) is a composer-performer, having completed his studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (2014) and the Royal Academy of Music (2016) in London, sponsored by the Aedas Scholarship and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music & Dance Fund. As a junior music student at the HKAPA, Lee received initial compositional instructions from Hau-yee Ng and Maurice Poon, but was otherwise largely autodidactic since entering the Academy as a fulltime flute student. Compensating for his lack of formal training, Lee’s musical formation as a performer – being immersed in flute lessons, chamber music classes, and orchestral rehearsals – helped him develop an innate sense of physicality for different kinds of instruments, which is reflected in his often-challenging writing, manipulating the margins of an instrument’s playability.
