Since their formation in late 2004, The Movement In Codes’ upwards trajectory in the ubiquitous realm of music has seen them ardently rise from underground favourites to one of Latin America’s most promising acts. Hailing from Costa Rica, the critically acclaimed group are known for their explosive live sets where might and elegance coalesce. Comprising of Marcos Monnerat, Miguel Garcia, Diego Rojas and Felipe Ureña, The Movement In Codes (TMIC) weave a dynamic narrative of intelligent sonic artistry that unequivocally captivates from the very outset. The group came into existence when four musicians from three different bands joined forces to collaborate. Heavily influenced by Metal, Punk and Alternative music, TMIC organically created a signature sound that sat squarely in the middle of all distortion based music. Effortlessly transcending the rigidity of any one genre, the band quickly gained a cult following. TMIC released a self-titled EP in 2005, winning ACAM (Asociación de Compositores y Autores Musicales de Costa Rica) Awards for Best Alternative Album and Best Video for the song "The End (Kamikaze)". By 2007 a radio edit of "Trouble In Legoland" was receiving heavy airplay on Rock station 979. The song steadily climbed the Top 20 until hitting number one, becoming the second most requested song of the year. Rolling Stone Magazine Latin America (sur) reviewed the band’s debut after the editor discovered their music. Hand-picked out of ten other releases to review in that edition, RS gave the album an impressive three out of four stars. In 2008 the quartet entered a Sonicbids contest to play at Lollapalooza. Votes came in from across the globe and at the end of the first round, TMIC came a narrow second place proving that their sound had reach and appeal in all continents. TMIC went back to the studio in 2009 to record The Art Of Falling Down. From the highly infectious guitar driven “Bullets” to sinew tugging “Emmer Cities”, the album took listeners on an emotive journey where optimism confronted melancholia in a glorious mêlée. Later that year the group was selected to play at the second incarnation of Festival Imperial, sharing the stage with the likes of Incubus, Smashing Pumpkins and Duran Duran. At the end of 2012, the band began crafting their third album One More Day. It was released in May 2014 leading up to the band’s series of gigs in Los Angeles. Receiving a rapturous reception nationally, the single “A Love Letter" rapidly gained traction on radio stations in Latin America and entered Top 10 lists. In August 2014, TMIC were chosen out of a plethora of bands worldwide to play at Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O’s exclusive listening parties for her debut solo album Crush Songs. Hosted by Sofar Sounds and Julian Casablanca’s Cult Records, TMIC were one of the very first bands scouted for the same-day parties that took place from Sydney to NYC. Organisers were instantly drawn to their sound. Passionate and devoted to their craft, hard-working TMIC have built a strong reputation as one of the most electrifying bands to emerge from Latin America. Frontman and producer Marcos Monnerat is widely considered to be a magnate of Contemporary Rock music in the region. Over the past decade, Monnerat has recorded albums for a hundred and fifty bands and supported the growth of the music scene parallel to his own journey as a recording artist with TMIC. The end of 2014 sees the talented quartet release their first video from the new album. “Open Sky” is an endearing exposition of life’s uncertainties and the resultant losses. The track showcases a softer, contemplative side of the band and delineates their sheer versatility as artists. Dedication, integrity and an inherent desire to create and connect; The Movement In Codes amalgamate high musicianship with an honest exploration of life’s trials, triumphs, tribulations and elations. From the abstract that is love to the tangible pain of fear, the music is bold, visceral- and written from the soul for the soul.
