Sten Rönbeck

Born in 1953, grew up in Olofström in Blekinge, Sweden and now lives in Hörby in Skåne. He could actually whistle already as an infant and picked up the guitar as a 12-year-old. In the 70's he toured with a blues and rock band and then played songs by i.a. Santana, the encounter with John McLaughlin's music aroused interest in jazz. Sten Rönbeck is completely self-taught from the beginning, but he has also studied jazz at Skurup's folk high school. In the 80's he had the quartet "Kvickrot" together with the tenor Karl Petermann from Karlskrona and in 1999 he started together with i.a. Johnny Enquist and David Sundby "Sten Rönbeck Quintet" who play exclusively their own material and a lot of freeform. In 2002, Sten formed a trio with singer Marika Cailly and guitarist Mike Peters and the same year another group emerged - "STEN", with an odd and consistent acoustic instrumentation; oboe, violin, guitar, double bass and drums.
