Australian vaudeville artist/comedian/actor (b. Port Macquarie, NSW. 18 Dec., 1891 - d. Carpentaria, Calif. 13 Aug., 1984) Began career as an acrobatic dancer aged 7, and by age 12 was on Tivoli circuit. At 16 travelled to England to work in music halls. Served in Royal Navy in WWI. After the war he briefly came back to Australia for Tivoli tour and made his first film "His Only Chance" (1918). Went to the U.S. where he was known as the "Kangaroo Kid" and began appearing in Mack Sennett comedy films from 1920. Later worked for Fox Films & Roach Productions. On stage in New York at the Hippodrome for one of Dillingham's revues in 1922, and began appearing in dramatic roles. In 1921 was described as "Chaplin's rival" and made many films from 1920 to 1963.
