Ethan Santos is a Los Angeles-based Filipino-American multi-instrumentalist, influenced by the sounds of Jazz, R&B, Soul, Gospel and Hip Hop, who’s performed his music at events such as the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, Salem Jazz and Soul Festival and San Joaquin Valley Jazz Festival. Ethan is also an avid sideman who’s translated his craft on trombone to a wide array of musical environments; these musical acts include performing with/alongside the likes of Ralph Peterson's Gen-Next Big Band (DC Jazz Festival/Scullers Jazz Club), Big Red Machine (Boston Calling) and The Berklee Silent Film Orchestra (San Francisco Silent Film Festival). His work at the BSFO also involved recording the new soundtrack on an NBCUniversal StudiosPost 4K restoration of the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs. His adaptive musicianship was developed during his time as a Presidential Scholar at Berklee College of Music from 2016-2019; it was here that he had the pleasure of working with the likes of Phil Wilson, Marshall Gilkes, Gary Burton, Danilo Perez, Ralph Peterson, Tia Fuller and Robert Glasper. He’s since moved to Los Angeles and is now actively playing trombone, bass trombone and flute for the likes of Bob Mintzer, Ricky Peterson, George Stone, Barbara Morrison, Luciana Souza, Flight of Voices, Printz Board, Trevor Wesley, sonofsteve, ILYS, Lucy Clearwater, MONIX, Perta, Elliot Bassick and Shelby 5. His future performances/releases include a promotional video in collaboration with Greg Spero’s studio, Tiny Room Studios, Dean Scarlett's debut big band album Good Eats, Fernando Huergo's big band album The Possibility of Change, Elise Go's EP Good Company, Wong Foo Jeng's album Quiet Night Thoughts and a big band arrangement for Ralph Peterson's Gen-Next Big Band. Ethan is currently pursuing a M.M. in Jazz Studies at the USC Thornton School of Music under the mentorship of Russell Ferrante, Peter Erskine, Ruslan Sirota, Andy Martin, Vince Mendoza and Bob Mintzer. As a fervent educator amongst his musical community, he’s taught at the KIDmunity and the California Arts Academy’s summer programs in addition to running clinics at the Buchanan Educational Center and Bullard High School and teaching private students. He extends this pedagogical practice by offering transcriptions of solos and songs, the PDFs of which are available on his website or through email. Videos of these transcriptions, performed on the trombone/bass trombone/keyboard, are also available for viewing on Ethan’s Instagram and YouTube. As an artist (especially one who plays Black music), Ethan will always pay respect to his values, which include the acknowledgment of the Black culture/history that has musically influenced him and given him a passion for music, his roots as a second-generation Filipino-American and his desire for empathy to understand the words and experiences of everyone he meets/plays with. Beyond music, Ethan is an avid rock climber and a co-founder of Frē Man, a men’s skincare brand dedicated to enabling and enhancing self-care, health, wellness and confidence in men of all ages.
