Kawa is a band from Yunnan’s Ximeng, an autonomous county for the Wa minority people in the southwest of China, bordering Myanmar. The relatively new band formed in 2014 and completed work on a first album. Although a relatively new band, Kawa have a lot of reggae pedigree through Lao Hei, their guitarist who is also the front man for Yunnan Reggae (云南雷鬼) and the Pu'er Dub Allstars (云南民间的回响). The rich Wa, Hani, Hui and other ethnic music culture has become the congenital soil for band positioning and development. However, Kawa is unique in that it completes the. powerful collision between Chinese ethnic minority music and more modern and global music influences.
