Lin Chia-ying is a composer born in Taiwan in 1990. She first studied composition at the Taipei University of the Arts with Yang Tsung-hsien, and then at the University of Manchester with Philip Grange, graduating with a MusM (Distinction) in 2012. After making her international debut at the age of 25, Lin garnered First Prize at the International Composition Competition Piero Farulli for her String Quartet, and Third Prize at the First International Jean Sibelius Composition Competition for her piano work The Gaze. Her compositions have been performed in Taiwan, the Mänttä Music Festival and the Hämeenlinna Town Hallin Finland; “Play It!” Music Festival at the Teatro Verdi in Florence; and the Vaganza Festival in the UK. Her music has also been picked up by various ensembles and soloists such as the Taichung-based National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Italy’s Quartetto Maurice, and the UK’s Psappha and Vaganza. Her compositions have been broadcast on Yle (Finland) and on Rai Radio 3 (Italy), and have received coverage from international outlets including Hufvudstadsbladet (FI), Keskisuomalainen (FI),La Repubblica (IT), La Nazione (IT), Corriere della Sera (IT), Il Corriere Musicale (IT), and the Central News Agency (TW). Her String Quartet was published through Casa Ricordi and her orchestral work Occultra was released by the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. Lin is currently based in Rome with the support of the Taiwan Ministry of Education’s Study Abroad Scholarship. She has been commissioned by the Goethe-Institut Korea to debut anew piece at the "Asian Composers Showcase" segment of the 2017 Tongyeong International Music Festival in South Korea. Her latest composition Etna made its world debut in Turin and captured second prize at the Michele Novaro International Composition Competition in Italy on Dec. 2, 2016.
