Black Planet is an American alternative band formed in Detroit, MI in 1989 by Sean "PapaSean" Franklin (drums) and James Allen (guitar) (deceased). It plays a mixed genre of funk, rock, hip-hop, rap, which the band calls UrbanMetalGhettoGrunge. Constantly playing the local Detroit bars, clubs, pubs, after-hour spots between 1989-94, Black Planet won two awards: The Metro Times music award for best R&B/Rap/Techno in 1991 and the Detroit Music Awards for Best Rap Group in 1994. After James death in December 1994 and catching up with rapper Frogg and learning of work he had done with George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars, Sean and Black Planet alumnist bassist Kerry Clark worked on Froggs album project eventually dubbed, "Froggadelic" with rap artist Alley Life. Later joined by Vinson Jordan on guitar and Elliott Rosado on guitar. Frogg and Alley Life onstage backed by a funk/rockband and Black Planet was born again. In 1999 Black Planet and Alley Life records some demos together and out of it the song "Out with the old, In with the new" is selected for the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 game. In 2000 Elliott Rosado is replaced by former Brothers From Another Planet guitarist Kenny Tyler. Black Planet returns to their roots and records "The Funk Stuff" at BPMusic throughout the summer of 2000 to be followed with more new material sometime.
