Sam Gary (February 19, 1917 – July 20, 1986), best known as "Gary", was an American blues and folk singer known for his collaborations with Josh White. The two had met in 1938 while appearing on Broadway and formed Josh White & His Carolinians. The group released one album before disbanding in 1942, but Gary and Josh continued collaborating and appeared together for Josh's 1956 album Josh At Midnight. In 1955 Gary recorded his only solo album Sam Gary Sings. It was released in 1956 on Tom Wilson's Transition Records in the U.S., and one year later was released in the UK by Esquire. At the time of its initial release a follow up titled Gary Sings The Gospel was announced, but was never released. Gary also briefly sang with The Golden Gate Quartet and performed in concerts with The Almanac Singers.
