Hawaiian queen and poet (d. February 15, 1836, ca. 80 years old) Kekupuohi was the wife of Hawaiian king Kalaniʻōpuʻu (c. 1729 – April 1782) when Captain James Cook came to Hawaii in 1778. Later, she married chief Kaiʻana and, after he was killed in battle, she joined the court of King Kamahameha II. When she converted to Christianity, she assumed the name Miriam Kekupuohi. Kekupuohi was a poet in the classical Hawaiian style who composed several Hawaiian mele, but also two Christian chants in Hawaiian, including "He Mele No Ka Ke Akua Hana Ana" (A Mele on the Creation).
