Maurie Gilman

Australian musician (saxophone), arranger & bandleader (b. New Zealand 1906 - d. Sydney 19?? Worked with and led various Sydney dance bands 1927-1938. Had acting role (as a jazz pianist) in the film "The Broken Melody" (1938) ands also recorded the music soundtrack for the film with a 12 piece band. In Oct., 1938 went to Singapore to play in Dan Hopkins Orchestra at Raffles Hotel (returned to Australia Dec, 1939). Led band at Bondi Esplanade (1940). Worked with other Sydney dance bands from late 1941 to Oct., 1944 after which bought a garage in Bondi and retired from music. In Sept., 1948 was conducting Colgate-Palmoliv shows, and in July 1949 returned as a bandleader at the Albert Palais but retired from music permanently soon after this.
