American writer, born April 11, 1905 Minnesota, died July 21, 1997 Los Angeles Lynn Root wrote the important black-cast Broadway musical “Cabin in the Sky.” He began his career as a stage actor in New York in the 1920s, a protege who appeared in many productions of Antoinette Perry, for whom the Tony Awards are named. But Root then switched to writing, doing several shows and “Cabin” in the 1940s. Relocating to Hollywood, he became a screenwriter providing scripts for such stars as Cary Grant, Fred Astaire and Bob Hope. Root and his wife, Helen, later collaborated on comedies produced in several smaller theaters around the country.
