American cartoonist, illustrator, sculptor, and writer (June 25, 1874 in Wilkes-Barre, PA – April 6, 1944 Springfield, MO) O'Neill grew up in Omaha, NE, where she experienced first success as an illustrator. In 1893, she moved to New York where she became a staff member of the satirical magazine "Puck" and contributed illustrations to "Harper's" and "Life" magazines. She became famous for her Kewpie cartoons, first published in 1909 and soon so popular that they inspired a series of Kewpie dolls. O'Neill also published novels and poetry and later, in the 1920s, turned to sculpting. She also became an ardent supporter of women's rights and the suffragist movement. For a while, she was the best paid female illustrator in the world.
