Singer, songwriter. Popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Born 1910 in Durban, South Africa Died 24 August 1975 in Dartmouth, Devon, UK. Roberts was five times the winner of an Ivor Novello Award, four for songwriting and one for services to the British Music Industry. He charted 16 times between 1937 and 1960 including two #1 chart toppers in the U,.K.--first with "Softly Softly" by Ruby Murray in 1955 (English lyrics co-written by Mark Paul (5)) based on "La tamise et mon jardin" by Pierre Dudan. His second #1 was "Lay Down Your Arms" by Anne Shelton in 1956 (co-written by Ake Gerhard & Leon Landgren). He had six other top 10 U.K. songs and one top 10 in the U.S.
