American contemporary visual artist (b. April 1961, Beverly, Massachusetts); lives and works in Catskill, New York. Portia Munson employs various mediums and techniques: sculpture, installation, painting, and digital photography, often exploring the themes of feminism and environmentalism. Munson is renowned for her large-scale installations of found objects arranged by color. Portia Munson began studying at Cooper Union School of Art in New York, graduating with her Bachelor's degree in 1983. Munson later attended Skowhegan School Of Painting And Sculpture, earning a diploma in 1987, and finally received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of Art in 1990. The same year, Portia Munson appeared in her first group exhibition. In 1994, she participated in the "Bad Girls" group show at NYC's New Museum with Pink Project: Table — thousands of tiny pink plastic found objects arranged on a table. This work became Munson's "breakthrough" into contemporary art mainstream. Munson has several notable fellowships and artistic residencies, including three from The MacDowell Colony (1992, 93 and 98). She was a visiting artist and lecturer at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the New Museum Of Contemporary Art, CalArts, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design, among others. Portia Munson is represented by New York's P·P·O·W Gallery.
