Ignace Hilsberg

Born July 8, 1894 in Poland. He died in July 1973 at age 78. At the age of nine, he was soloist with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra; the following year he won a scholarship at the Petrograd Conservatory, and on his graduation he was summoned to play before the Imperial family. When he toured the Orient, he was invited to play before the President in the Palace at Peking, and was awarded the medal of Chevalier of the Chinese Republic. Later, he held the chair of professorship for two years at the Royal Conservatory in Athens* Greece. Upon Mr. Hilsberg’s coming to America, he was selected from hundreds of applicants to be soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He has likewise appeared as soloist with the Boston Symphony and Buffalo Symphony Orchestra. From 1926 to 1936 he was on the faculty of the Julliard Foundation in New York. In December 1936 Mr. Hilsberg was soloist with the L. A. Philharmonic under the direction of Dr. Otto Klemperer; in 1943 he appeared with Mr. Steinberg and the Buffalo Symphony, and in 1946 with a Wallenstein, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
