Pandit Gobindram was from Punjab and started his career as a music director in Hindi Films in the late 1930s when he composed for Jeevan Jyoti (1937). He composed music for many Punjabi and Hindi films made in Lahore. Among them, Mangti (1942, Punjabi) and Sahara (1943,Hindi) were notable films. Mangti celebrated silver jubilee and is also remembered as a debut film of playback singer Zeenat Begum. After partition, he shifted to Mumbai and composed music for few Hindi films including Sarkar (1951), Jalpari (1952) and Raj Mahal (1953). He worked extensively with Shamshad Begum and also composed the most number of songs for her, approximately 86 Hindi songs in 19 films. Panditji was a true Lahori. Other music directors based at Lahore immediately shifted to Bombay when they achieved little prominency, like Shyam Sunder, Master Ghulam Haider, Feroze Nizami, Khurshed Anwar, Rashid Atre, Amar Nath etc but he stayed at Lahore until partition compelled him to cross the Redcliff line
