He worked as a vacuum cleaner salesman, fire escape salesman, car salesman, and roofer while getting his music career off the ground. As a songwriter, he charted 88 times in the U.S. (including one in the U.K.) between 1956 and 1988. His top hit was the #1 country song "All the Time" by Jack Greene in 1967, which he co-wrote with Mel Tillis. In 1958, "Are You Sincere?" by Andy Williams hit #3 overall in the U.S. Twenty-six of his country hits made it into the top 10 and fifteen in the top 5.
