Harry R. Wellman (7 June 1881, Lowell, Vermont — 19 December 1956, Concord, New Hampshire) was an American educational administrator, amateur composer and songwriter, and Professor Emeritus of Marketing at Dartmouth College. Wellman is remembered for composing Dartmouth's official school song, Men of Dartmouth (or Alma Mater), on lyrics by Richard Hovey (2). Wellman graduated from Brigham Academy in Bakersfield, Vermont, and enrolled in Dartmouth College in 1903 when he was twenty-two. Harry participated in various musical activities as a student, composing the school's comic opera, The Founders, and writing for college ensembles. After graduating with his Bachelor's degree in 1907, Harry Wellman worked as a dormitory supervisor at Dartmouth. The same year, he wrote music for the 1894 poem "Men of Dartmouth" by Richard Hovey (1864—1900); the College adopted it as an official hymn twenty years later. In 1909, H.R. Wellman published the second edition of "Songs of Dartmouth College," co-authored with Edwin Osgood Grover (1870—1965). Wellman lived in Boston for several years and had a prolific business career, leading the marketing for William Filene & Sons Co. fashion retail chain and later for Walter M. Lowney Company candy manufacturer. In 1919, Harry returned to Dartmouth College and joined the faculty at Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, where he taught marketing and served as Personnel Officer and Advisor on College Affairs until his retirement in June 1952.
