A fine songwriter, he played with a number of excellent groups,. After starting his career with Calvin Moore in Oklahoma City, Prine relocated to the Texas Gulf Coast and was playing with Cliff Bruner's band by late 1943. After a stint with Moon Mullican in 1945-46, he joined Luke Wills' Rhythm Busters in California, recording with Wills on King in early 1947 before heading back to Texas. He formed his own All-Stars soon after, an aptly named band that included, at various times, such top notch musicians as Cotton Thompson, saxophonist Cotton Irwin Doc Lewis and many others. The band backed Cliff Bruner on his second Ayo session in late 1949, then recorded several sessions for the label under Prine's name, featuring vocalists Rusty McDonald (soon to join bob Wills) and Slim Watts. The All-Stars by this time included fiddler Robert Shivers, steel guitarist Deacon Anderson, saxophonist Lew West, pianist Ben Mullins, and the peerless swing bassist Buck Henson. Prine turned over the All-Stars to Slim Watts sometime during 1950 and relocated to California, leaving full time music. He was posthumously elected to the Sacramento Western Swing Hall Of Fame.
