Kārlis Kāre (real. name. Kārlis Reintāls; 1910-1980) - public figure, writer and chess player. He spent his childhood in the Smiltene area, graduated from Valka Gymnasium (1928) and the Department of Natural Sciences of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Latvia (1936). Worked as a teacher in Valmiera and Riga. In the autumn of 1944, he went to Germany as a refugee, where he ran Latvian primary schools in Flensburg and Hamelin. In 1947 he emigrated to Australia. Author of the poetry collections "Naked Shores" (1965), "Kukabarra" (1971) and "Simplicity" (1974). In the poetry, both the landscape elements of Australia and the humorous and satirical observations of the Latvian exile society.
