American composer, music director, pianist, and jazz and blues musician. Born April 28, 1941 Providence, Rhode Island Died September 29, 2021 (aged 80) Newport, Rhode Island, U.S. Renzi began his musical career at the age of 14 in Providence, playing weddings on the accordion in his uncle's band. He graduated from the Boston Conservatory in 1973 and from Berklee College of Music in 1974. His first jazz job was in a group lead by tenorman Art Pelosi, who joined Renzi at a concert at Brown University in 1987. Renzi worked with two close friends from New York City, drummer/vocalist Grady Tate, and vocalist/bassist Jay Leonhart. He was a musical director for Peggy Lee and Mel Torme for over 25 years. He also worked often with Lena Horne. He worked on Sesame Street as the music director for seasons 31 through 40 and recorded Our First Christmas with singer Cynthia Crane and lead the Mike Renzi Trio. Renzi remained for decades one of the most sought-after accompanists in the music business, especially in jazz circles.
