Canadian producer and record company executive originally from the UK. Born in Sutton, England he left his role as manager of Mills Music in London in 1966 and moved to Canada to run Burlington Music Of Canada Ltd.. Founded publishing companies Summerlea Music / Summerlea Music Ltd and Winterlea Music Ltd. in 1968 with Bob Hahn. Launched the record company Much Productions Ltd. and its Much label in September 1970 for CHUM Ltd. Launched the label Sweet Plum in September 1972. Much ceased operations in late 1974 and on January 1, 1975 Chater founded his new company B.C. Music Management and its publishing companies Melbrooke Music (BMI) and Melville Music Ltd. / Melville Music (CAPAC). In 1981 he co-founded publisher Avenue Road Music Group Passed away September 12, 2013. A major force in Canadian content and copyright as a director of: Canadian Music Publishers Association since 1979 (President 1983 to 86) Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency since 1982 Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records (FACTOR) 1982 to 1985 / 1988 to 2006 (one of the founders) Neighbouring Rights Collective of Canada (later known as Re:Sound) 1997 to 2007 (one of the founders) Radio Starmaker Fund 2004 to 2007 He was also President of the Canadian Independent Record Productions Association (CIRPA) (later known as Canadian Independent Music Association) from 1987 to 2006. CIMA commemorates him with annually with the Brian Chater Industry Award. Awards received: The Canadian Songwriters Award from the Songwriters Association of Canada (1993) Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Canadian Music Industry (2000) Recognition of Extraordinary Support award from FACTOR (2002) Special Achievement Award from SOCAN (2003) Industry Builder Award from Canadian Music Week (2005)
