US country artist from Springfield, MO. Dean Mathis, and his wife, Charlene, are the new owners of the Wayside Inn on Highway 24 at the west edge of Moberly. Dean has wide experiences as an entertainer and Charlene is a former photography and fashion model. Born and reared at Niangua, 30 miles northeast of Springfield. the son of farmers, Dean started his career by playing guitar for local square dances and at 20 began singing. He has cut five records, the first one, Stubborn Heart, Nashville, 1962; second, Unfaithful Sweetheart 1963; third. Blue Lights and Broken Hearts, 1965, was on charts for 23 weeks, was No. 1 for 13 weeks and No. 11 fo ra year. It also hit the national charts. The fourth record. Too Much Temptation, was No. 14 on the charts, on a national basis, also; and the fifth. Nobody Blue. Dean was on the Grand Ole Opry in 1962 and had his own TV show out of Sedalia in 1955. He also worked (singing) TV out of Springfield and radio out of Topeka. He has toured 25 states singing, and has worked with every major star in the country' field! such as Red Foley, Roy Clark, Loretta Lynn, Hank Thompson, Hawkshaw Hawkins, George Morgan, Grandpa Jones, Rusty Draper and many others.
