Early 20th century British flute/piccolo player, and Professor of Flute. Born 2 March 1884 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, UK - Died 26 July 1949 in Paddington, London, England, UK. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London. Early in his career, he was a member of the Royal Victory Band. He was successively principal flautist in the The New Symphony Orchestra Of London, Beecham Symphony Orchestra, Queen's Hall Orchestra, The New Queen's Hall Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra (1914-1920), Royal Philharmonic Society (1925-1932), BBC Symphony Orchestra (1930-1938) and London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1926 he founded a chamber ensemble of leading wind players known as The London Wind Quintet. He was also member of The London Flute Quartet (with Frank Almgill, Gordon Walker and Charles Stainer). He was Professor of Flute at the Trinity College Of Music, London and the Royal College of Music.
