The New York based quintet was founded in 1976 by pianist Constance Emmerich, violinist Eliot Chapo and oboist Gerard Reuter. In 1977 they were joined by cellist Daniel Rothmuller and in 1980 by viola player Barbara Hustis. During the seasons, cellist Godfried Hoogeveen, violinist Earl Carlyss and viola players Alan DeVeritch, Richard Brice and Jesse Levine also have been members of the ensemble. Taking its name from a familiar song by Franz Schubert meaning “to music”, the ensemble is hailed internationally for its fresh and innovative programming built around its unusual instrumentation of oboe, strings and piano and its unique collaborative storytelling projects, with painters, writers and composers, granting them a place in the foremost rank of world-class chamber music ensembles today.
