British cellist, conductor and, cello teacher. Born 14 June 1912 in Newchurch, Lancashire, England, UK - Died 1979. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London. Member of the London Symphony Orchestra (1933-1938), The Philharmonic Ensemble, The Philharmonic String Trio, and the Harry Isaacs Trio. Principal Cello with [a988712]. He relocated to Adelaide, Australia where he became member of The Elder Trio (1959-1962), conductor, and cello teacher at the Elder Conservatorium. He is best remembered when, during a concert in London's Wigmore Hall performing Anton Webern's "String Trio Op. 20", left the stage after several bars announcing "I can't play this thing - a nightmare - not music at all, but mathematics."
