Bertil Bokstedt

The conductor and pianist Bertil Bokstedt, former head of the Royal Opera in Stockholm, passed away after a long illness (obituary published 2010-09-28). He was director of the Opera between 1971 and 1977. Bokstedt became 91 years old. Bertil Bokstedt was working at the Opera for almost 40 years, mainly as a musician. But he also became an important manager in many roles. He worked as a reporter, chaplain, study leader and planning manager. In 1971 he succeeded Göran Gentele as opera manager. In the late 1950s, Bokstedt was also often an accompanist for the great Jussi Björling. Bertil Bokstedt was also curator at the Drottningenolmsteatern for many years, where he also served as conductor. During his time as opera manager, Bokstedt worked for increased touring operations and an expanded subscription system.
