Andrzej Zulawski, 22 November 1940 – 17 February 2016, was a Polish movie director and writer. He was born in Lviv, Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine), and died from cancer in Warsaw Poland. He studied cinema in France in tne 50s, and was a director's assistant to Andrzej Wajda in two feature films, in Wajda's 'Samson' (1961), and in his 'Popioly' (1965). His own feature film debut as a writer/director was 'Trzecia czesc nocy'/'The Third Part of the Night' (1971), a horror drama written by him and his father, Mirosław Żuławski (1913-95), who in 1974-77 served as Polish ambassador in Seneagal. After his second feature, 'Diabel'/'The Devil' (1972), was banned in Poland, Żuławski went to France where he built up a reputation as an arthouse/blood-horror movie maker which always included former young and beautiful French actresses à la mode, who now got a new start thanx to his movies. Among them were Romy Schneider and Isabelle Adjani...one of Zulawski's most famous movies is the 1981 Palme D'Or winner, 'Possession' with Adjani, a nightmarish horror movie inspired by David Cronenberg's early to mid 70s "virus sex" monster movies. It's been cut or forbidden inb many countries. Its full feature length is supposed to be 124 minutes, ie. 119 mins. on VHS, DVD, blu-ray or on TV. He was married to Małgorzata Braunek 1972-76, and they had one son, Xawery Żuławski, born on 22 December 1971 in Warsaw. He's also a movie director. Andrzej has a second son with Hanna Wolska, Ignacy Żuławski, born in 1978. And he and Sophie Marceau were partners 1985-2001. They have one son, Vincent, b. 24 July, 1995.
