Juan Helguera

Juan Helguera was born on February 14, 1932 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. He was a composer and writer, known for Yaxcabá (1979), Joyas tradicionales de Yucatán (1994) and Ponce y la guitarra (1981). He died on March 3, 2020 in Mexico City, Mexico. Mexican guitarist, composer, chronicler and researcher. Considered a true diffuser of the guitar in Mexico and the world. His radio program "La Guitarra en el Mundo" had more than three decades of success. As a critic, writer and composer he has received numerous distinctions. His music has been performed in Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Russia, Canada, the United States, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Martinico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Chile, Germany, Japan and Colombia. He was known above all for his collaborations as a musical commentator in newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Lecturer in several countries of the continent, he organized guitar cycles for INBA, UAM, UNAM and ICY. He received the Yucatán and Eligio Ancona medals.
