Saxophonist who played with Sun Ra (born 1939 in Wilmington, Delaware – died May 12, 2017 in Wilmington, Delaware) Spencer grew up in Harlem and became a professional musician in New York City, but also toured Europe. Most notably, he performed with Sun Ra on the 1966 LP "The Magic City." In 1980, he moved back to Wilmington to care for his aging mother. Eventually, he re-started his music career, performing on the same bill as Dizzy Gillespie at one of the first editions of the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival. He also joined the faculty of the Grand Music School (now The Arts Academy), where he taught for almost 15 years. In 2011, he was hired to serve as the artistic director of the Nomad Bar, a Wilmington jazz club on Orange Street.
