Ten Inch Men was formed in Long Beach in 1983 by record producer Dana Allen for his label Obelisk Records. The band originally consisted of Dave Coutts (vocals, guitar), Jim Schumacher (keyboards, vocals), Mark Templin (guitar), Rusty Riopelle (bass), and Steve Coutts (drums). The original band never got signed to a major label, but their music was know in the college communities. the 12" single "Good For The Soul" from 1984, received a lot of rotation and made it to No. 3 on Long Beach radio station KNAC. Ten Inch Men performed their first stadium size show at Long Beach State in march 1984, opening for punkband X. In 1986, Ten Inch Men released their four-song EP Hours in Pain containing the original recordings of "Flower Power", "Bars Of Time", "Brick Wall" and "New Eyes". "Flower Power" became their signature song & made it to No. 1 in New York City. in the last months of 1986, the original members parted ways, until Dave, Mark and Steve brought in Danny Keough to play bass, forming the new lineup which remained until the release of 1993 release Pretty Vultures on Victory (10). The band disbanded permanently in 1993.
