Gyris Anders

Swedish painter and violinist, born 15 January 1822 in Älvdalen parish, died there 14 February 1909. In his youth he emigrated with other parishioners with a sect leader to the United States, and lived 1871–1874 in Cincinnati, but returned after a time to Sweden and Älvdalen where he supported himself as a traveling painter. He participated in the famous transport of Karl XIV Johan's sarcophagus from Älvdalen to Gävle. He was also known as a violinist, and a number of polskor and bridal marches have been preserved after him. His violin playing was distinguished by the fact that he often used three strings on the violin at the same time.
