János Gémes, or Dixi (as everyone called him), became a cult figure known throughout Budapest in the 1960s. An experimental poet, a non-stop performer who, until his death, was a special character in the usual evening acts taking place in nightclubs in Budapest. He was free when everyone felt like a prisoner. He flew his poems into the wind in an ecstatic, surreal language. Speech became an expression of aesthetics and spirit, language was used by someone for what it is for. He uttered his strange lyrics in intoxication, ecstasy. He was a seer, a fortune teller and a shaman. Some kind of leader, a twentieth-century Socrates, is a bit like a wandering preacher followed by his disciples.
