Phil Carroll (4)

A native of Maplewood, New Jersey, Phil Carroll was a businessman and long time jazz fan and collector who decided to launch the Atlanta Jazz Party in 1990, an event which was continued by his son Phillip through 2016. He produced 15 CDs that were either made live during the party or in studio sessions on Sundays after the conclusion of that year's event. He was very particular about the musicians he chose, favoring music in the style of swing, Chicago Jazz, traditional jazz, stride, etc. He wrote liner notes for each of the CDs that he produced and supervised the recording sessions. Even though it was his event, he and his wife Lee would take a seat at the back of the room after introducing the beginning of a session. He died on Monday October 13, 2008 at his home on Lookout Mountain following a long battle with cancer.
