Born near the town of Perham, Minnesota. Early on he joined the polka band The Bauck Brothers from New York Mills, Minnesota. In 1951 with his brother Bill Derke he organized the band of Melody Artists. He Moved to the twin Cities in 1958 continuing the Melody Artists music and style.
