Gustav Schwegler

Gustav Schwegler (7 September 1860 — 7 October 1922, Munich) was a German operatic bass. He debuted in 1887 and primarily performed at Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and Staatsoper Berlin. Schwegler also toured abroad in Belgium and Covent Garden Opera in the UK. Gustav specialized in Wagner's repertoire, including the roles of King Marke in Tristan and Isolde, Hunding in Die Walküre, Heinrich der Vogler in Lohengrin, Hermann in Tannhäuser, and Fafner in Das Rheingold. He also sang Sarastro in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Tommaso in Tiefland by Eugen d'Albert. In 1913, Gustav Schwegler participated in one of the earliest extant recordings of Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" on the German label Anker Record, co-starring with tenor Jacques Decker as Siegmund and soprano Erna Denera as Sieglinde in Die Walküre's first act recorded with Blüthner-Orchester conducted by Edmund von Strauss.
