Conductor Born in Tokyo in 1951. Music Director of the Portland (Maine) Symphony since 1986. Made his conducting debut at age 11 with the Tokyo Boys Choir of which he was a member. Moved to the U.S. at age 15. Graduated from California State University, Northridge. He studied conducting with Hans Swarovsky in Vienna and also with Leonard Bernstein, Michael Tilson Thomas and Herbert Blomstedt. In 1979 he was a finalist in the Herbert von Karajan competition. He has recorded with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra on the Vienna Modern Masters label.
